INFO

  • AAIR is a artist-oriented organization that grants time, space and mobility to national and international artists. AAIR wishes to create a sustainable context for artistic development.

    AAIR:

AAIR operates from a location in the heart of Antwerp clustering the various ambitions of the organization. The director’s house of the former biscuit factory De Beuckelaer, behind the Antwerp Zoo, houses four living and working spaces for international residents, the collective workspace of the annual international development platform STRT Kit, and the organization’s office. In the monastery nextdoor, AAIR rents out 30 affordable workspaces to 50 artists.

AAIR emerged from the synergy between Air Antwerpen and Studio Start. Both organizations have long endeavoured to create an ideal working environment for artists; Studio Start targeted Antwerp artists and creative entrepreneurs, while AIR Antwerpen concentrated on international visual artists. Over the course of eight years, an ongoing conversation between Studio Start and AIR Antwerpen led to an intensifying collaboration resulting in AAIR’s long-term vision: a new artist-oriented organization whose mission, operation, and structure contributes to the careers of inter/national artists.

Traveling Words invites AAIR residents to share what they are currently reading and thinking about during the lockdown. This is the second chapter in an online series that reflects on new meanings that images, words and sounds can carry throughout different times of uncertainty and separation. It was preceded by the video program Traveling Images.

    1. Anna Housiada is reading “The Life of Plants: A Metaphysics of Mixture” by Emanuele Coccia (Polity Press, 2019)

“Philosophy has always overlooked them, more out of contempt than out of neglect.”

Plants are at the bottom of the hierarchy of living beings, a decoration for the culture of the superior ones. This book encouraged me to challenge this hierarchy and to consider what is there to be learnt from the plants. It is a philosophical guide to the botanical world introduced as a domain of metaphysics, even magic; a space that brings bits of knowledge together and demonstrates a poetics of interconnection.

What can a flower teach an intellectual being about rationality? What can leaves teach us about breathing, and what do roots know about being in-relation?

    2. Hatice Pinarbasi is reading “Sorcières: La puissance invaincue des femmes” by Mona Chollet (Éditions La Découverte, 2018)

“La magie apparaît paradoxalement comme un recours très pragmatique, un sursaut vital, une manière de s’ancrer dans le monde et dans sa vie à une époque où tout semble se liguer pour vous précariser et vous affaiblir.”

I used magic last year for my transformation into a snail. This metamorphosis allowed me a longer and slower observation of a multi-color reality. I wonder how I can get out of this precarious world with no colourful future. I stick close to the ground to listen to the messages of the earth-Earth. It vibrates too much with fatigue… The leaf tells me: “This confined year orders most of us to slow down and stop our bodies and time.” The tree answers: “We see a small advantage: to stop our bodies and minds from the capitalist and authoritarian clock and to identify what politics we wish for our planet populated by a masked humanity which does not stop exploding instead of blooming…”

The equality of the sexes is present in the snail, one does not dominate the other, they are both. This brings me to the subject of this book that I liked. Mona Chollet speaks especially of the power of the woman dismissed by misogynistic capitalism: she disturbs thanks to her powers. The massacres of witches are crimes, these women who are put aside or who are eliminated are an ever present and poignant subject. In this lock-time, I am looking for a key to open a door of hope, to a world healed thanks to the magic of nature… I am still looking for the “RévolutionE”.

    3. Zinaïda Tchelidze is reading “Beautés du monde invisible” (Éditions Larousse, 1960) and “Marcher avec les dragons” by Tim Ingold (Zones sensibles, 2013):

“Nous oublions à quel point il est difficile de détacher la réalité de notre vie dans le monde, et du monde dans lequel nous vivons, des élans méditatifs de notre imagination. Le problème n’a en fait rien à voir avec la manière dont nous le posons : il ne s’agit pas à se demander comment réconcilier les rêves de notre imagination avec les caractéristiques du monde, mais de s’interroger sur le moyen de les séparer.”

On the cover of this book lies a newspaper clipping that hides the true identity of its title, distorts its meaning and creates a new reading of what the book is about. The original title is “Beautés du monde invisible” by Larousse. I question the concrete phenomenon of the encyclopaedia, which clearly defines things, classifies them and prevents the imagination from arising. The customized cover thus illustrates my reading, my research around the thin line between the real and the imaginary, the visible and the hidden.

I find myself confined, surrounded on one side by a monastery that was once forbidden to “sinners” and enclosed by its divine secret and, on the other side, by a Zoo temporarily closed and sheltering those creatures who are isolated in a zone of apparitions and illusions rigorously dissociated from the realm of real life. I remain in search of “Méthodes pour exister” as an individual that is collective by nature rather than individual.
